Stay to SeeHistoric St. Augustine, Florida
St. Augustine, America's oldest city, also holds the distinction of being one of the nation's most charming. And the new Renaissance Resort at World Golf Village is only minutes from its sights, sounds and sensational shopping and dining.
St. Augustine was founded 42 years before the English colony at Jamestown, Virginia. It existed 55 years before the Pilgrims landed on Plymouth Rock in Massachusetts. Thus, it is the oldest permanent European settlement on the North American continent.
In 1513, Ponce de Leon landed just north of present-day St. Augustine, and you can visit Ponce de Leon Park, the site of an ancient Indian village where Ponce de Leon is said to have discovered the North American continent in 1513. You can still drink from the world-famous spring - the Fountain of Youth - and see the landmark cross, made of 27 coquina stones and believed to have been placed there by Ponce de Leon himself.
You can also explore Castillo de San Marcos National Monument, with its elaborate double drawbridge entrance, suspended above a moat spanning an impressive 40 feet. The monument has been closely intertwined with the city’s history, as well as that of neighboring Fort Mose to the north and Fort Matanzas to the south.
Flagler College is located on 19 acres, the centerpiece of which is the grand Ponce de Leon Hall, a former luxury resort hotel now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
As with any location steeped in history, there are many exciting museums located in the area. Among them is the Lightner Museum, which opened its doors in 1889. Henry Flagler's Alcazar Hotel, with its distinctive Spanish Renaissance styling, staggered guests with its style and opulence. The building now houses the Lightner Museum, featuring an intriguing array of items, from Native American artifacts to preserved birds, steam-engine models and more.
Enjoy a horse drawn carriage ride through the city, and behold historic homes dating from 1790 to 1909 in Old St. Augustine Village. And take a walking tour of the old city's historic inns and taverns.
When you stay at Renaissance World Golf Village Resort, our central location allows you intimate access to all the pastimes and pleasures of historic St. Augustine.
